candles brightly shining
in a season of advent underlying
the scandal of incarnation and joy
for many years ago
in birthpangs to-and-fro
a chosen girl births life into the world
and as angels sound the praise
of the Ancient of Days
and Immanuel, God born among us, comes forth
great hope pierces the horizon
in this Child with mother lying
the scene of tranquility and rest
a future glimpse is that moment
quiet cooing of an Infant
whose Life shines out beyond time and space
